Deep-brown Dart Aporophyla lueneburgensis

Until recently it was believed that we had two species of Deep-brown Dart in the UK, Northern Deep-brown Dart Aporophyla lueneburgensis and Deep-brown Dart Aporophyla lutulenta. It is now understood that they are the same species.

The records showing at the Norfolk Moths website suggest that the species is increasing in the county, but the vast majority of records are from the Brecks or the NW corner of the county. Elsewhere it is still very uncommon in the county.

After my first in 2024 I caught three more in my garden in 2025, in line with the increase seen in the county.

In one of the following photos I have included a Black Rustic for comparison. These two species could conceivably be confused although the larger, longer Black Rustic normally has clearler white marks around the kidney mark and lacks the brown tones of Deep-brown Dart.
