Coccinellidae (ladybirds)
Since acquiring the Field Guide to the Ladybirds of Great Britain and Ireland by Helen Roy and Peter Brown and wonderfully illustrated by Richard Lewington (published by Bloomsbury in 2018) I tend to turn to this first when attempting to identify ladybirds. The keys (Duff and Hackston) are a much harder and usually un-necessary way of identifying the more distinctive species but can nevertheless help with some of the trickier ones such as the so-called inconspicuous ladybirds. It's helpful that the field guide also covers larvae and pupae, life stages that are often encountered in this family.
