Badister dilatatus

Badister dilatatus Badister dilatatus Badister dilatatus
male Badister dilatatus showing close-up of pronotum and aedeagus, North Elmham (Norfolk, UK), 24th June 2019

I had previously featured two more beetles on this page but I have realised one was misidentified so have moved it (to Badister collaris). The other was was not fully identified but I don't think it was dilatatus so it shouldn't feature here and have moved that too.

Both insects showed a slight angle at the hind angles of the pronotum but the change in direction at this angle is very slight on this one whereas on the collaris the sides straightened slightly before the angle and were then straighter to the neck after the angle. There are small differences in the aedeagi too - on here the rounded projection at the apex is more blob-shaped and is curved in the same direction as the curve of the whole aedeagus. It is finer and straighter on collaris and not broadening at all at the tip. On the above dilatatus the subapical hook is very fine, sharply pointed and clearly angled downwards so directed at less than 45 degrees to the side of the aedeagus; on the collaris it was slightly thicker and blunter and angled closer to perpendicular to the aedeagus.
