Narcissus Fly Merodon equestris

Also known as Narcissus Bulb Fly or Greater Bulb-fly.

This is meant to be really common so I'm not sure why it took me so long to find one. Actually I didn't even find this one - a neighbour found it and thought it looked interesting so brought it round to me in a jam jar. And I'm very glad she did.

A month later I found my own. I didn't identify it in the field or retain it, so hoped the photos would prove sufficient for an ID, which they did. The loop in vein R4+5 is just visible and the hind legs are wholly black (base colour - the tibial hairs are orangey).
