Twin-lobed Deerfly Chrysops relictus
Although their bites can be a little painful there is no doubt that the Chrysops deerflies are among our most attractive fauna. I think this had already bitten me when it was buzzing round my head and being a nuisance as I was trying to deal with pitfall traps. I swung my net around my head hoping it would either be caught or at least go away and stop bothering me. It went straight in, so I duly took it home to examine it. Apparently one of the commoner deerflies so perhaps surprising I haven't identified one before. The yellow hind tibia and pattern of the abdomen help identify it.
