Barrow's Goldeneye Bucephala islandica
I've only seen this species in Canada so far.

Barrow's Goldeneyes, Golden (British Columbia, Canada), 16th September 2006
If I remember rightly, I identified the above birds at the time as Barrow's Goldeneyes based on the rather steep forehead and relatively short triangular bills. It has to be said that I have no other experience of Barrow's Goldeneye, and even Common Goldeneye with which I am familiar in winter, I have never seen in September. I recall being a little doubtful at the time as there seemed to be some variation in both head shape and bill shape among the birds seen, and evidently this confusion continued when I got home and reviewed my photos. I realised that the following photo appears to show a longer-billed individual and it seems that at some point I re-labelled it as [Commmon] Goldeneye. Looking back at it now I am not entirely convinced. Although perhaps not as steep on the forehead as the ones above, the crown seems rather flat. Was it a Common Goldeneye among a group of Barrow's Goldeneyes, or were they all Barrow's? I'd be happy to hear from you if you're more experienced with these than I am!
