Ant Beetle Thanasimus formicarius

Known as Ant Beetles due to their mimicry of Velvet Ants. I think it's the commonest member of the family and the only one I've found so far.

This one was on a conifer trunk, found by torchlight at night.

This was also on a tree trunk, found by day.

Again, found on a tree trunk - Oak if I remember rightly though I didn't make a note of it.
