Rhinoceros Beetle Sinodendron cylindricum
Variously known as the Horned Stag Beetle, Rhinoceros Stag Beetle but I think more commonly as just Rhinoceros Beetle. Described as scarce.
This one was found at rest during the day (fairly early) on a birch trunk. It was retained to confirm the ID as it wasn't a species I was familiar with, but in retrospect it is such a distinctive species that wasn't really necessary. It looked like it had its head smashed in, but this was the normal excavate shape of the front of the pronotum. Perhaps the "damaged" look was enhanced by the fact that this concave front to the pronotum was covered in dirt.
