Devil's Coach-horse Ocypus olens

A large and distinctive beetle. Formerly Staphylinus olens.

I think this was found in the daytime.

This one was found adjacent to where I was moth-trapping with LED lights, though I'm not sure if it was attracted to light or just happened to be there.

I don't often attempt to identify beetle larvae but this was so big I was pretty sure it must be this species. I don't think I keyed it to confirm but the general appearance matched and from the size (using the microscope camera I couldn't get it all in a single frame) I think it must be this.
