This North American species is a rare but regular visitor to the UK.

On this individual the white at the base of the bill appeared to be restricted to the top of the bill which made me wonder if it could be impure, but I could see no other indications to suggest it was a hybrid. Apparently first-winters can show reduced white on the bill so this may be the explanation, though I saw another first-winter drake the same day (Caerlaverock, above) and that still showed a limited amount of juvenile feathering (e.g. on the flanks) but had a more fully white surround to the base of the bill.
